Round 9 Senior Football Match Report

This was easily our biggest challenge for the season. Playing the Diggers Rest, who are undefeated and who are arguably flag favorites. Diggers have talent across the board, with ex AFL, VFL players and a host of exciting, damaging local footballers. They are well coached and it is no secret that they are aiming to win the Premiership in 2016. However my message during the week was to welcome the challenge and play with some confidence. To take the game on at every opportunity, we had to believe in our own talents and continue to be ruthless at every contest.

We started the game well but did not make the most of our opportunities and were down by 3 or 4 goals at quarter time. We changed a few structures and from that point, the players really stood up and competed well. We had all the play in the second quarter however gave up four goals in red time, which really hurt. We didn’t get rewarded for our effort. To the boys credit they never gave up and continued to drive forward. Although we lost by 20 points, I feel we can take some confidence from the game. Reflecting back, it was disappointing / frustrating in a sense because I felt we had opportunities to win the game but to compete with the best team in the comp and really push them shows we are not far away and heading in the right direction.

Best players:

Brett Hayes went down back and played a key role. Michael Mannix continues to show his class and leadership. Andrew Saladino and Brenton Hanson won their fair share of the footy and Dillan Gillard was pivotal in his first game for the season.
